Industrial PhD Student - Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems Diesel

The group Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems Diesel develops and validate emission aftertreatment systems to meet new environmental legal demands, balanced with other engine attributes such as fuel consumption, performance and noise/vibrations. Our responsibility reaches from early advanced engineering work to final verification of production systems. Aftertreatment systems is a significant factor in today's Powertrain development and is the major contributor for creating solutions for the environmental challenges laying ahead. Our challenge is to develop fuel efficient engines that meet future stringent legal requirements regarding nitrous oxides, carbon monoxides, hydrocarbons and particulates. This requires us to develop the best technical solutions that meets legal requirements which is balanced with cost and engine attributes.

We are now looking for an Industrial PhD Student within the area of lean NOx traps poisoning and regeneration strategies with the goal to reach a PhD degree after approximately four and a half to five years. PhD studies involve independent work to achieve results of scientific value. At the same time, you will have possibilities to interact with developers and researchers, both at Chalmers and at Volvo Car Group, skilled in the relevant research area. The position includes work within VCC and Competence Center for Catalysis at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Main responsibilities

* Study origin of deactivation within field aged catalysts
* Determination of severity of different sources for ageing using vehicle / engine test bench
* Analysis of deactivated catalysts
* Kinetic modeling of significant mechanisms for ageing
* Define and recommend regeneration strategies for vehicle calibration

Required qualifications

* A strong academic record with a M.Sc. in engineering, preferably in Chemical Engineering
* Deep knowledge within analysis methods and simulation
* Good understanding of controlling a catalytic system
* Fluent in English written and oral
* Able to use Matlab for simulation scripts
* Drivers license B

* Self motivated and used to take own initiatives
