The Department of Technology Management and Economics conducts prominent research within areas such as logistics, innovation, entrepreneurship, industrial marketing and quality sciences. The department consists of seven divisions and three research centres. Our research is linked to several of Chalmers Areas of Advance.


Information about the project
The Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology is looking for a PhD Student in History of Technology. History of technology examines technology and technological change from a historical perspective. The emphasis is on explaining technological change as well as understanding the social and cultural consequences of technological change.

The position is based at the Research Group for History of Science and Technology at the Division of Innovation Engineering and Management. Above all, the Research Group examines the large modernization projects of the twentieth century from the perspective of history of science and technology. The Research Group teaches courses in history of technology, history of science, the social role of the engineer and sustainable development.

The candidate is expected to plan the PhD project in consultation with the supervisors.

Major responsibilities
The applicant is expected to:
- conduct research of high international quality within the subject area,
- take part in the research group's teaching activities, i.e. administrating, coordinating, teaching and developing courses, and/or performing other duties corresponding to 20 percent of working hours,
- participate in the subject area's national and international meetings and networks.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD-student you must have (or be close to finishing) either a MSc level degree in Engineering, or a Bachelor's or Master's degree with a minimum of 90 Swedish credits in history of technology, history of science, history of ideas, economic history, history, science and technology studies or corresponding. Additional qualifications for applicants with a MSc level degree are: Master's thesis on a historical subject, particularly history of technology and/or courses in history of technology.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
